Loeb, director of Harvard University's Institute for Theory and Computation, told The Washington Post that the pulses could represent periodic bursts of thrust used for orbital adjustments or other internal functions within a spacecraft. 3I/ATLAS, formally known as Comet ATLAS, was discovered in 2020. It gained attention for its unusual behavior and brightness as it approached the Sun. While comets often exhibit unpredictable activity, the regularity of these pulses has prompted Loeb's unique interpretation. He has previously advocated for searching for evidence of extraterrestrial technology in the solar system, viewing it as a legitimate scientific pursuit.

Loeb’s suggestion stems from the observed periodic nature of the signals. Natural comets typically display erratic and unpredictable behavior, making a consistent, rhythmic pulse highly unusual.
