Buñuel's 'Viridiana' Returns in 4K, Opens Nov 14
Luis Buñuel's controversial and once-banned film, *Viridiana*, is returning to theaters in a stunning 4K restoration. Janus Films will release the Spanish surrealist classic, starring Silvia Pinal, beginning November 14 at Film Forum in New York City.
The film, known for its sacrilegious themes and challenging portrayal of charity, initially sparked significant controversy upon its release. It was banned in Spain shortly after its premiere in 1961 and faced censorship in other countries. *Viridiana* tells the story of a young woman, set to become a nun, who is manipulated by her uncle, a wealthy and cynical man.
Janus Films, a leading distributor of classic and international cinema, is presenting the restored version, allowing audiences to experience Buñuel’s vision with unprecedented clarity. The 4K restoration promises to highlight the film’s striking visuals and deepen the impact of its provocative narrative. Film Forum, a renowned non-profit cinema, will serve as the initial venue for the re-release, offering a limited engagement for film enthusiasts and those interested in exploring a pivotal work in cinematic history. Further screenings at other locations are expected to be announced.
